Greetings from my crazy office

Greetings from my crazy office... Wow what a busy month it has been! For a recap of what has been going on...June 2-3 myself and 3 4-Her's traveled to Mesa Vista Ranch for Fishin 'N Fun, we were involved in a fishing tournament, ate a cowboy style supper, did some night fishing, camped in tents, and the next morning we finished with a cowboy style breakfast.
We returned on June 3rd, just to re-pack for Black Mesa Camp on June 4th. June 4-6 myself, Mike and 22 4-Her's traveled to Black Mesa State Park for the Multi-County 4-H camp which included fishing, shooting sports, rock climbing, water Olympics, crafts and Aggie Olympics, just to name a few. Black Mesa is always a good time and we looked forward to it every year.
We returned from camp on Friday and on Sunday I packed up again and left for State Round-Up in College Station!! What an awesome week we had there! Seven of our nine teams that competed, were 4th or above overall. Both Dallam County scholarship applicants were awarded great scholarships. We returned Friday evening from College Station and that Monday.... we had a week packed full of steer, summer pig and goat validations. Needless to say, June is always packed with camps, State Round-Up and validations, but we wouldn't have it any other way!!

Happy Summer!!

Greetings from my crazy office....

Greetings from my crazy office...Yay, we got some rain, hallelujah!! As we wrap up May and I begin to get ready for all my summer camps, State Roundup, and validation in June, I can't help but think about sweet summertime and the heat...
Interesting Fact #1 - You should apply one ounce-(enough to fill a shot glass) of sunscreen to every exposed area of your body that the sun can hit. Re-apply sunscreen every two hours, after swimming, or sweating heavily.
Interesting Fact #2 - With it being as hot as they think it is going to be, staying hydrated is a big concern for people. To calculate how much water you need a day, multiply your weight in pounds by 0.08; the result is your requirement in eight-ounce cups.
Interesting Fact #3 - Keep in mind that about half of the fluids people need comes from fruits, vegetables and other solid foods.
I hope these facts will help you stay hydrated this summer and enjoy your family time!!

Greetings from my dirt infested office (thank you, wind)

Greetings from my dirt infested office (thank you, wind)... Spring contest are wrapping up this week and summertime is upon us! I can only hope May weather is better to us than April weather was. Flowers are waiting to be planted after the last freeze.
Interesting Fact #1.. On average, the last freeze for Dalhart is April 30th, (we will see what happens). Summertime is full of camps to participate in.
Interesting Fact #2.. Over 8 million kids attend summer camp in the U.S.A every year according to American Camping Association. Make sure you are one of those kids and check out all the camps that 4-H has to offer in our newsletters!
I hope May treats you well!!

Greetings from Dalhart

Greetings from Dalhart.... 2014 stock show season is now behind me, thank goodness! Dallam and Hartley Counties had an EXCELLENT major stock show season and I could not be more proud of the kids and families for all their hard work!! Now we get into all our spring contests and begin getting ready for summer camps, projects and State 4-H Roundup! There are 5 contests in the month of April and 4-Her's have been making practices and working hard to prepare themselves for what's to come during their contest. Without the help of our wonderful volunteers we would not be able to have so many teams competing at the county and district level. We are looking forward to the spring and summer and are excited about what all the 4-Her's will accomplish and the fun memories they will make!

Greetings from warm and cozy office!

Greetings from warm and cozy office!

Man it’s good to be home for a short while before I hit the road one last time for this year’s major stock show season.  So far, Ft. Worth, San Antonio and San Angelo have taken place and Dallam & Hartley Counties have had as AWESOME show season!

With all my traveling lately it got me to thinking, “How many miles, on average, does a person drive per year?”
  • Interesting fact #1--According to the US Department of Transportation a female of the age group 20-34 drives 12,004 miles per year.  I have no doubt that I come very close to that each year!
While I’m home, the clothing and textiles project is kicking off with the ‘Bi-County Textiles & Arts Extravaganza’.  This is such a fun evening of projects to help everyone get in the mood for the fashion and art spring season!
  • Interesting fact #2-- In the 1800’s fashion “shows” were called fashion “parades”.  American retailers adopted the concept in the early 1900’s and in 1903 the first fashion show was held in New York City.
As show season wraps up and spring contests begin I want to wish all the kids GOOD LUCK and HAPPY SPRING!!

Greetings From My Untidy Office Desk...

As I gear up for another major stock show season I can’t help but be excited and anxious for all my families who give up so much time to hit the open road in hopes of bringing home a ribbon, banner and a buckle.

The National Western has come and gone and as I start to consume my mind with major shows I like to learn interesting facts about each show.

Interesting fact # 1- did you know that the average size of a fat steer at the National Western jumped from 40 inches tall in the 1960’s to nearly 60 inches tall in the late 1970’s?

Today the National Western hosts a variety of breeds from around the world.

My first major show stop will be the legendary Ft. Worth Stock Show and Rodeo (probably my favorite).

Interesting fact # 2- before changing its name in 1987 to Southwestern Exposition and Livestock Show, Ft. Worth was known as Texas Fat Stock Show and admission was only 25 cents.

My, how times have changed.  I am looking forward to watching all of my kiddos and traveling across the big state of Texas again this year.

Good luck to all the Dallam & Hartley major stock show exhibitors and see ya down the road!
